Make It Happen for Yolo County and Davis Sunrise Rotary Club partner to provide furniture for local underserved teens and young adults

Twenty volunteers from the Davis Sunrise Rotary Club recently assembled 40 storage cubes for underserved teens and young adults, supporting their partnership with the nonprofit Make It Happen for Yolo County. The effort was funded by a $2,000 grant from the club. Make It Happen will distribute the cubes – along with furniture, household goods, and other resources – to clients, many of whom have experienced foster care, probation or homelessness, as they furnish their first homes. The cubes are especially popular with students in the UC Davis Guardian Scholars Program, all of whom have experienced foster care.

“While securing housing provides an essential and vital foundation of safety and stability, the absence of a bed to sleep on and basic household essentials leaves quality of life significantly diminished, impacting mental and physical health, financial well-being and the ability to live independently,” said Cathi Schmidt, executive director, Make It Happen for Yolo County. “We are grateful to the Davis Sunrise Rotary Club for helping us provide these adaptive cubes that work well in small apartments as bookcases, dressers and more, allowing our youth to have agency, make a home and focus on their futures.”

For more than a decade, Make It Happen for Yolo County has served under-resourced local transition age youth ages 16-24 by providing more than 100 furnishings and household items essential for a safe, comfortable home. As the only organization in Yolo County offering these services, Make It Happen receives furniture and monetary donations from the community to purchase new appliances and household items that help youth involved with the Yolo County child welfare and probation divisions, as well as local nonprofits and the UC Davis Guardian Scholars program. Since its founding in 2014, Make It Happen for Yolo County has helped nearly 400 transition age youth.
